Migration is one of the key topics in the political debate, not only in Switzerland; many countries face similar challenges. It is therefore in the interest of all countries to exchange information on the issue. This is the purpose of the Inter-Governmental Consultations on Migration, Asylum and Refugees (IGC) forum, in which migration experts from the 17 participating countries can exchange information and learning on strategies, practices and data.

Switzerland is a founding member of the forum, established in 1985, and is taking on the chair in this its 40th anniversary year. The State Secretariat for Migration will organise several high-level meetings over the course of the year, at which Federal Councillor Beat Jans will also attend. Furthermore, experts from the various countries will come together in meetings and workshops to share their operational experience.

Switzerland's chosen theme for 2025 is ‘Maximising the potential of migration for the labour market'. This is a challenge but at the same time an opportunity. Many Western societies are facing growing pressure from migration flows. At the same time, many countries are experiencing a lack of skilled labour, a situation which is in part attributable to an ageing population. Migrants and refugees can make an important contribution to economic growth and prosperity. The discussions and information exchange within the IGC focus on the best way to achieve this.

IGC membership is an essential part of Switzerland's international migration policy. In taking on the chair in 2025, Switzerland underlines its leading role in this field and has an opportunity to contribute its expertise at international level.
