Biosafety
The IVI operates laboratories at different biosafety levels. Our site at the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Bern has BSL-2 laboratories for diagnostics and research. In addition to BSL-2 labs, our Mittelhäusern site has a BSL-4 high-security facility for working with highly infectious epizootic diseases. Within this BSL-4 shell, Mittelhäusern also has BSL-3 laboratories for safe working with zoonoses.
Biosafety at the IVI
The highly contagious epizootic pathogens in risk group 4 pose no health risk to humans, but a high risk to susceptible animal species. As required by law, the shell of the high-security facility meets the standards of biosecurity security level 4 (BSL4) for working with epizootic pathogens. The facility comprises laboratories compliant with BSL3 for working with zoonotic pathogens.
Biosafety - networks and training
To stay up-to-date with the latest developments and share our experience and expertise, the IVI is actively involved in national and international networks on biosafety and prioritises training, both internal and external.
